Mike Cooter

Drawing & Print (Drawing & Print)

Forensic Poster was first realized in 2006 and reactivated in 2011; its making consisted of the artist visiting the London School of Criminology and corresponding with the interim director there in order to reproduce a poster by memory. This piece of work is symptomatic of Cooter’s projects which are often arduous enterprises littered with pitfalls, since they imply prospecting and collaborating with third parties whose will determine the success of the project. Forensic Poster consists of a letter, emails and a gouache which translates the artist’s attempt to recreate a poster glimpsed at in one of the study halls of the London Police Department of Forensic Medicine.

Mike Kelley

Sculpture (Sculpture)

Towhead n’Ganga, enclosed in darkness, lorded over by the sexualized folded high priestless form reflects many of Kelley’s works, in both its compositional and semantic qualities. The drawing on wood, the popcorn mixture, and the title all manifest a bumpy fullness, a “more-is-more” conflation between supposedly eternal spirituality and everyday stuff. The work’s title points to a serious timelessness completely belied by the materials.

Mike Cloud

Painting (Painting)

In his series Hanging and Beheading Paintings Mike Cloud speaks to the suffering of a series of named (and occasionally unnamed) individuals, addressing their trauma within the language of abstraction. They offer the viewer an aesthetic account of individuality, death, and the empathic space of communion in absence via avant-garde portraiture, unbound by the rules of anatomy or even representation, but instead by purely expressive compositional and aesthetic goals. Untitled (Beheading) embraces the individual subjectivities of notable and mundane contemporaries — from pop stars to serial killers — in cryptic ways, connected only by the physical circumstances of their deaths.
